Child safety standards
Fibs is for adults only. This page sets out what we do to keep children off it and how to report anything that harms a child. It describes what is in place today. Where something is not in place yet, it says so.
Our standard
We do not allow child sexual abuse or exploitation of any kind on Fibs. That includes sexual or sexualised images of anyone under 18, grooming, sextortion, and any content or contact that sexualises a child. We also do not allow photos of anyone under 18 at all, sexual or not.
An account that breaks this rule is banned. The material is kept in private storage as evidence, not deleted.
Who can use Fibs
- You must be 18 or older. Everyone confirms their date of birth when they sign up.
- If that check fails, the result is recorded against the account and cannot be undone from the app. It can only be reviewed on appeal.
- We never store anyone's date of birth, only that the check was passed.
- An account that fails the check, or that we find belongs to someone under 18, is removed from the feed and from its public page.
What happens to photos
- Fibs takes photos only. Video uploads are refused, and private messages cannot carry images.
- Every photo posted to the feed is screened automatically for nudity and sexual content before anyone can see it. If the screening cannot run, the photo is not published.
- Profile photos appear straight away and are screened in the background. A profile photo that fails is taken down and its owner is told.
- Anything removed is moved to private storage, not deleted, so it can be handed to the authorities if needed.
How to report
In the app: report the photo and choose They may be under 18 or Sexual content involving a minor. A photo reported this way is hidden immediately, before anyone reviews it.
Without an account: use our report form and choose The person in this photo is under 18. You do not need to be a member. If you include the link to the card, the account's photos are hidden as soon as the report arrives.
Reports about a child are handled without anyone opening the image.
What we do with a report
- A person is alerted as soon as the report arrives, and it goes to the front of our review queue.
- If the account belongs to someone under 18, it is banned and signed out.
- If the material sexualises a child, the account is banned and signed out, and the material is moved to private storage and kept for at least a year.
- Every action we take is recorded, and that record cannot be edited.
Not in place yet
Fibs is not open to the public. These are owed before it opens, and they are not done:
- Registration with NCMEC. US law requires us to report apparent child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. We have not yet registered to file those reports. Material is preserved in the meantime.
- Round-the-clock response. Reports reach a person by email at any hour, but nobody is on call to answer them overnight.
This page will be updated as each one is completed.
Contact
Our child-safety contact is support@fibs.app. It is read by a person. Law enforcement requests go to the same address.
If a child is in danger
If a child is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number. You can also report child sexual exploitation directly to NCMEC's CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org or 1-800-843-5678.
